NEW LONDO, Conn. — Coast Guard Station Fishers Island, located on the southwestern side of Fishers Island, N.Y., conducted its annual seasonal closure Sept. 3, 2013.
Station Fishers Island, a search and rescue detachment, operates during the boating season from Memorial Day through Labor Day. During the off-season, maritime response capabilities are transferred to its primary command, Coast Guard Station New London, in New London, Conn.
The original Station Fishers Island was established in 1901 and was located East Harbor. The current station was established in 1958 following the closure of the original Fishers Island Station that was turned over to the General Services Administration and eventually sold as a private residence. From 1958 to 1975 the unit was an active full time Coast Guard station with 15 members and two rescue boats. Due to budget cuts and under-utilization, in 1975 the station was converted to a seasonal station that is operational in the summer only. Today the station is manned by both active duty and auxiliary Coast Guard members.
Mariners within Long Island Sound are reminded to report all marine emergencies to the Command Center at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound using VHF-FM radio channel 16 or by calling (203) 468-4401.
