DALLAS – Selflessness and respect shown by one local boy has earned him a special commendation from the Marines of 8th Marine Corps Recruiting District.
Clay Watson, a student at Episcopal School of Dallas, was presented a Certificate of Appreciation Oct. 7 for his fund raising activities for military personnel.
Watson first started his interest in helping the troops in 2009. He found out his mother’s work was collecting gifts for troops overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq and he wanted to help.
Watson invited people to his birthday party recently, but instead of bringing gifts, he requested care packages for troops. He collected almost 100 packages to send to them.
In a class at school, he was directed to find a nonprofit organization to research, and he selected Helping Our Heroes foundation. During the time of his research, he collected $690 and donated the money to the foundation.
He doesn’t have any family in the armed forces or know anyone who serves, but feels the need to show his appreciation.
“I know the armed forces sacrifice their lives for us, and I just wanted to help them,” Watson said.
