MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. - Jets, planes and helicopters aren’t the only thing filling the sky at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif. Children’s excitement for the holidays is in full swing as Col. John Farnam, the commanding officer of Miramar and Brig. Gen. Mark Wyse, the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing assistant commander kicked off the holiday season by lighting the station’s Christmas tree at the Post Exchange Nov. 23.
The event was full of Christmas festivities, including hot chocolate, cookie stands, tumbling performances and a special appearance by Santa Clause and the Grinch.
Many Marines volunteered with Marine Corps Community Services to bring Christmas cheer to the kids.
“It feels great to see the smiles, the people and hear the great holiday music,” said Lance Cpl. Andrew T. Duffy, who volunteered to pass out Christmas hats at the event. It’s amazing to spread the spirit of holidays within the community.
Farnam said this was a great way to kick off the holiday season.
“Things like this are important here,” said Farnam. “The mission goes on all day, every day, all around the year. It’s great to be able to take a break once in a while and come out here and have a great time as a family and really put a smile on the kids’ faces. That’s what really matters.”
Until that cold morning on Dec. 25, children will anxiously await Santa to return to deliver all the gifts on their wish list.
