MILLINGTON, Tenn. - United States Navy Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Ty C. Connors, son of Grant A. Connors and Janet C. Connors of Brunswick, Maine, was named Navy Recruiting Command’s Junior Sailor of the Year and Naval Support Activity Mid-South’s Junior Sailor of the Year for fiscal year 2013 in Millington, Tenn. For his achievements, Connors was meritoriously awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
“I’m honored I was chosen to represent the base and be recognized for my service,” said Connors. “I also appreciate my command and leadership for allowing me the time and flexibility to be involved in community events.”
A native of Brunswick, Maine, Connors entered the Navy in 2010 as a mass communication specialist (MC), helping tell the Navy’s story through news and feature stories, photographs, video, public affairs support, and graphic design.
After basic training in Great Lakes, Ill., Connors attended MC training in Fort Meade, Md., and stayed to receive advanced training in video production and documentation.
Connors reported to Navy Recruiting Command in April 2011. He served as a staff writer for the Public Affairs Office until January of 2012 when he transferred to the Creative Division of the command’s marketing and advertising department as a staff videographer.
“If I were to give advice to other sailors on the base, I would say to pick something you are passionate about and find opportunities in your community where you can help out,” said Connors. “I was a former school teacher, so I chose to mentor kids like coaching a local swim team and being an officer in the Sea Cadets.”
Before enlisting, Connors earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Southern Maine in 2006.
“The Navy will recognize you with awards and certificates,” said Connors, “but the real reward will be the experiences you share and the relationships you foster.”
Connors’ next Navy assignment will take him to Japan in the spring where he will serve aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6).
Connors’ military awards and decorations include a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Global War on Terror Service Medal.
Connors is a 1998 graduate of Brunswick High School, Brunswick, Maine.
