MILLINGTON, Tenn. - In the time-honored tradition of a change of command ceremony, U.S. Navy Capt. Christopher H. Heaney, relieved Capt. Gregory Maguire as the new commodore for Navy Recruiting Command’s Region East. The ceremony was held in December at Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, Tenn.
As the new commodore, Heaney oversees 13 recruiting districts to include approximately 1,225 recruiting stations and more than 2,000 recruiters.
“I was excited for the challenge, especially being new and having limited prior involvement with recruiting,” said Heaney.
Navy Recruiting Region East encompasses the entire eastern half of the continental United States, along with stations in Europe, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
“It was an honor, and to think that half of all recruiting is my responsibility is humbling,” said Heaney. “I greatly look forward to working with the team.”
Heaney is the son of Edward and Ann Heaney of Glastonbury, Conn., and is a 1986 graduate of Glastonbury High School. Heaney currently calls Pensacola, Fla., his home.
Heaney entered the Navy as an ensign in May 1990 after completing Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) training at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. He then reported to flight training and was designated an unrestricted naval aviator in 1992.
During his 24 years in uniform, Heaney has served with numerous squadrons including Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 3 (HC-3) at Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, Calif., Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 11 (HC-11) at NAS North Island, Helicopter Training Squadron 18 (HT-18) at NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Fla., USS Coronado (AGF 11) in San Diego, Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 6 (HC-6) in Norfolk, Va., USS Saipan (LHA 2) in Norfolk, Va., C4 Systems Directorate (J6) of the United States Joint Forces Command, Norfolk, Va., Helicopter Training Squadron 8 (HT-8) in Milton, Fla., USS Nassau (LHA 4) in Norfolk, Va., and Naval Education and Training Security Assistance Field Activity International Training Center (NITC)in Pensacola, Fla.
Heaney’s awards and decorations include the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, four Navy Commendation Medals and three Navy Achievement Medals. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics, master’s degree in diplomacy from Norwich University, and master’s degree in organizational management from The George Washington University.
Region East has already been recognized for its outstanding recruiting efforts with five sailors being recognized as Recruiters of the Year for the entire Navy Recruiting Command enterprise in 2013. He is proud to serve with such talented sailors.
Most sailors reporting for a tour as a recruiter do not have previous recruiting experience and are coming from the fleet, said Heaney.
“As fleet sailors [new to recruiting command], I’d like you to listen and ask many questions during your training track to become a recruiter and then look to your own experience joining the Navy and emphasize the positive aspects,” said Heaney. “This, mixed with your fleet experience will bring your recruiting station to a higher level of capabilities.”
Heaney brings to the region a great deal of leadership experience and has already traveled to several districts as part of his commitment to working closely with his regional team.
“I want to build the region around a family concept where COs are empowered to lead the districts in ways that accomplish the Navy recruiting mission together, as a rising tide,” said Heaney.
