YOKOSUKA, Japan -The U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington’s (CVN 73) floor hockey team won the Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) Captain’s Cup championship game, March 3.

Fenton Fliers carried an undefeated 11-game streak in 14 competitive days against 15 teams.

“It feels great to be able to represent George Washington and its carrier air traffic control center as a whole,” said Air Traffic Controller 2nd Class Austin Boettcher and Fenton Fliers’ co-captain, from Stafford, Va. “We played hard and fought together through many tough games and we made it.”

Captain’s Cup games promote friendly competition between sailors stationed at CFAY, and are aimed to raise morale and create camaraderie.

“Any sort of sporting event creates good relationships and camaraderie,” said George Washington’s Command Master Chief Shaun Brahmsteadt. “It takes a lot of effort and work to have a good team; hopefully, the experience and ethics our sailors learn from winning these games bleed over to their work aboard our ship.”

According to Air Traffic Controller 2nd Class Steven Ratajczyk, Fenton Fliers’ co-captain, from Virginia Beach, Va., being involved in Captain’s Cup competitions are a great experience. The teamwork built from being out in the ring builds the teamwork they need and definitely reduces the stress in their work center.

“We would like to give a shout out to all of the competing teams,” said the Fenton Fliers. “We had a great time competing against all of the teams this year and we are excited for the challenges we will face in the future.”

This is the fourth 1st place finish thus far for George Washington during the 2014 Captain’s Cup. Other victories included Men’s and Women’s basketball, and the “Kick Off the New Year 5k” run.

George Washington and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interests of the U.S. and its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
