EAST CHINA SEA – Sixty-five sailors aboard the Austin-class amphibious transport dock ship USS Denver (LPD 9) participated in the Navy wide E-4 advancement exam March 20.
Many of the sailors felt that being on deployment offered an advantage over being on shore, where they could find themselves more easily sidetracked from their studies.
“Being underway helped since I didn’t have many distractions,” said Logisitics Specialist Seaman Andrew Silva, of Las Cruces, N.M. “Underway you’re either working, in the gym, studying, or sleeping.”
Denver sailors prepared for the exam in numerous ways.
“I used the online bibliographies some,” said Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Edward Norwood, of Tampa, Fla., “but mostly I studied my rating manual.”
Silva said that one of the key aspects to doing well on the exam was to start studying as soon as possible.
“I studied every time we had divisional training and all throughout the workday,” said Silva. “I made flashcards I looked at on breaks, during chow, whenever I could.”
Many Denver sailors hope their preparation will lead to advancement once the results are announced.
“I think I did pretty well,” said Norwood. “Hopefully I made it.”
The sailors took the exam during Denver’s current deployment in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations as part of the Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group.
Denver is one of three ships of the Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group conducting spring patrol. This is Denver’s last scheduled deployment, as the ship is slated for decommissioning later this year.
