FORT BENNING, Ga. - Usually the Soldiers in brigade S6 would be re-imaging laptops, ensuring certificates are up to date, doing radio checks or on the phone with the Nippon Electric Company (NEC). But not this day, all hands assigned to 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division were at Building 9003 setting up the Deployable Rapid Assembly Shelter (DRASH) for Sergeant’s Time Training on August 7, 2014, Kelley Hill, Fort Benning, Georgia.
The Brigade S6 section is composed of radio, network operations, automations and communications security section.
“This training is important because it helps the Soldiers within the S6 section to understand each role or part they have in setting up a tactical operation site and reinforce teamwork. Also it allows the Soldiers in the brigade S6 section to familiarize themselves with the components and employment of the DRASH system,” said Sgt. 1st Class Tremayne Thomas, brigade communication security manager assigned to 3rd ABCT, 3rd ID.
The DRASH is a quick-erect tent system and its primary purpose is to integrate shelter, mobility, lighting, heating, cooling and energy efficient power into one comprehensive package, he added.
“I think this training is important because you need to be able to assemble and disassemble the DRASH effectively to reposition the site,” said Spc. Keshia Henry, a tactical signal support specialist assigned to 3rd ABCT, 3rd ID.
“Also it gives us the opportunity to identify any missing components and bond with other Soldiers within our section”, she added.
Like with anything, the wear and tear of equipment being set-up and torn down can cause it to be damaged and components to be less effective, Henry added.
“The advantages of using a DRASH system is the ability to quickly establish a tactical operational site and not have to rely on a permanent structure to be made in order to operate. The disadvantage is that it is not idea for a permanent site operation,” said Thomas.
Thomas said their goal is to have the DRASH setup and operational within 30 to 45 minutes from the time they occupy the training area.
