MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Commanding officers and sergeants major from across 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing gathered for the quarterly Commanders Forum at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Feb. 2.
The Commanders Forum allows leaders from across 2nd MAW to speak to the wing commander and sergeant major to discuss ideas, concerns and best practices to meet future challenges across 2nd MAW.
“We provide information and facilitate discussion among the commanders and sergeants major on current issues within 2nd MAW,” said Maj. Dionisio Cooper, the operations officer with Marine Air Control Group 28, the squadron that planned the event. “The purpose of the forum is to increase awareness for senior leadership on 2nd MAW issues, best practices and to give them a basic understanding of the Marine Air Command and Control System.”
According to Cooper, the commanders also took part in simulation exercises to broaden their understanding of how the wing supports the mission of II Marine Expeditionary Force and the Marine Air-Ground Task Force. Marines with Marine Air Support Squadron 1 operated a Direct Air Support Center while Marines with 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion demonstrated its response to low altitude aircraft threats.
“It is important for the commanders to understand how their Marines function in order to use their skills to support the mission,” said Cooper. “The walk through made it easier for them to see the units actively participating in drills simulating real responses.”
Sergeants major from across the wing discussed personnel issues and shared information to improve the counsel and leadership they provide as senior enlisted advisors to the wing’s squadron commanders.
“Whenever we all get to come together to discuss 2nd MAW and share our ideas it is a great opportunity for us to know other units better and to receive feedback,” said Sgt. Maj. Scott D. Grade, the MACG-28 sergeant major. “We don’t get to see all these other sergeants major outside of these Commanders Forums and it helps us identify one another better.”
According to Grade, the sergeants major discussed how senior leaders can continue to help Marines excel and maintain readiness across the wing.
“The most important thing about these forums is keeping communication between commands,” said Grade. “Without active communication, the overall mission of 2nd MAW cannot be completed.”
