    Story by Sgt. Jesse Smith

    2nd Combat Aviation Brigade

CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – In 1968, the Philip A. Connelly Awards Program for Excellence in Army Food Service was established. The program was named for Connelly who paved the way for better food service in and out of the military. The award represents a standard set by Connelly for all food service units to be the best they can be.

Soldiers from the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division competed for the Connelly Award on April 1 just outside of Camp Humphreys in South Korea. They prepared breakfast and lunch for judges sent to grade them on their performance.

Sgt. Jamera A. Lea, a food service specialist with the Company E, 4th Aerial Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment, was one of the noncommissioned officers who competed.

Lea has been in Korea for the past 23 months and said it has allowed for her to grow on both a personal and professional level by furthering her education and improving her technical skills.

“I have won multiple awards and honors and have really been able to utilize my opportunities here,” Lea said.

She said she is proud to be competing at such a high level.

“We have already won on the 8th U.S. Army and USARPAC levels and now we are competing at the DA level,” Lea said.

Spc. Brandon Wesley, a food service specialist with the Company E, 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion, was another soldier who competed.

“I like to cook and I love Korea,” Wesley said. “Winning this competition would mean everything to me and would make me feel like a champ.”

Both Lea and Wesley said they feel like they couldn’t have done better and that they definitely won the competition.

The Soldiers competing finished a theater-wide field exercise less than a week before going out to the field again to set up for this competition.

“We accomplished the unimaginable and I am very proud of our Soldiers,” said Lea. “We will take away more than just winning from this though. We will take the knowledge we learned from it.”

Sometimes it’s not all about winning but what you gain from the experience. These 2nd CAB Soldiers showed that they can set the bar high and intend on staying there.
