SAVANNAH, Ga. - Rear Adm. Annie B. Andrews, commander, Navy Recruiting Command, delivered the commencement address to approximately 400 graduates at Savannah State University May 9.
During her speech, Andrews identified the Navy’s core values and how they apply to Sailors and civilians.
“There are three simple but powerful characteristics that make up our core values,” said Andrews. “They are: honor, courage and commitment. These are the seeds of success in decision making. These are the seeds of success in the development of our future leaders in the Navy and these seeds are vital to business and the management of human lives.”
Being an alumna of Savannah State University, Andrews was able to connect with the graduates on a personal level.
“I am so pleased to return to my alma mater and share this moment,” said Andrews. “I certainly would not be the person I am today without the Savannah State University experience and education.”
During her time at the university, Andrews was a Midshipman with the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. (NROTC). This year’s graduation ceremony included the commissioning of 17 naval officers, the largest commissioning in Savannah State University’s history.
After the graduation ceremony, Dr. Cheryl D. Dozier, president of Savannah State University, announced the university is establishing two, $1,500 scholarships in Andrews' name to be awarded to NROTC female students.
"We are so very proud of Admiral Andrews' career accomplishments,” said Dozier. “As we celebrate the university's 125th anniversary this year, it is most fitting to have Admiral Andrews share her seriously impressive story with our graduates."
