INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana is well represented in this year’s Army National Guard Best Warrior competition currently underway in Utah. The national competition pits warriors who won their regional competition in two categories, Soldier of the Year and Noncommissioned Officer of the Year.
Representing Region IV and Indiana for soldier of the year is Spc. Garrett Rigel, an automated logistics specialist for the 138th Quartermaster Company in Brazil, Indiana. Rigel won competitions at battalion, brigade, state and region. The Region IV competition was held at Camp Atterbury in May.
“I expect to win, that’s my goal,” said Rigel. “I’m going to give 100 percent, and if everything works out, I should be the winner.”
The NCO of the year representative is Sgt. 1st Class Samuel Wagner, a fires section sergeant for the 38th Infantry Division’s Company A, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion. Wagner said he trained with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2nd Battalion, 152nd Infantry Regiment, but he was promoted and moved to the division’s headquarters unit, which he represented in this year’s state and region competitions.
“I expect a real-world, fast-pace tempo with long days and no sleep and intense action,” said Wagner. “Hopefully I can be smart and outlast them.”
The competition started today at Camp Williams and will run through Thursday. The competition will include an Army physical fitness test, familiarization fire, skill stations, ruck, range stations, boards and a mystery event.
