FORT MCPHERSON, Ga. - Playing in the Eastern Conference in the Women's National Basketball Association, Atlanta Dream players are accustomed to bringing smiles to the faces of fans by shooting three-pointers or scoring on fast-break layups but recently they brought smiles to veteran faces by engaging them in some meaningful one-on-one interaction.
Atlanta Dream guard Roneeka Hodges and forwards Cierra Burdick and Sancho Lyttle visited Atlanta VA Medical Center’s Fort McPherson campus and interacted with Veterans and staff at the Community Resource and Referral Center and Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans. CRRC and DCHV provide a wide range of services for Veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.
The players brightened the veterans’ spirits by autographing T-shirts and other individual items.
“It makes us all feel special that these three professional basketball players took the time out of their busy schedule to come see us,” said one female veteran, grinning from ear-to-ear. “We all really enjoyed their visit and they definitely made our day.”
The Atlanta Dream players noted how they benefited from the visit as much as the veterans. The players said it is important to take every opportunity to thank all veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice.
“We all owe them so much for the huge sacrifices they make to protect our freedoms,” Hodges said. “Coming out here and seeing all the smiles makes you feel better about yourself.”
