    7th Infantry Division

JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. - A previous Fort Lewis and 7th Infantry Division commander visited the headquarters building named in his honor.

Retired Lt. Gen. William H. Harrison, who commanded the 7th Inf. Div. 1985-1987 at Fort Ord, Calif. took a tour of Harrison Hall at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Aug. 4.

Present commander, Lt. Gen. Terry Ferrell, was on hand to present a few of the displays, including a wall just inside the headquarters entrance exhibiting photos, plaques and a large book of news clippings that tell the story of Harrison’s time as commander of the “Bayonet” division.

“It’s the right thing to do, to honor this man who has left such an amazing legacy,” Ferrell said.

The visit was also an opportunity to induct the former 7th Inf. Div. Commander into the Order of the Bayonet, a division tradition, authorized to members of the 7th Infantry Division for personal performance of duties deemed by a commander to be ”above and beyond the call.”

A formation of 7th Inf. Div. Soldiers applauded as Harrison added his name to the registry of those in the Order of the Bayonet.

Visibly touched, Harrison expressed his happiness at seeing the state of the present 7th Inf. Div., saying “You’re a good looking bunch.”

Harrison was also a former I Corps commander at JBLM, and went on to become the first mayor of Lakewood, Wash., home to many Soldiers stationed here.
