DECATUR, Ga. - On July 24- 27, many DeKalb County businesses and residences lost water after a major leak involving a main water line.

As part of the county’s emergency response, officials issued a water advisory, cautioning all 722,000 DeKalb County residents not to drink tap water without first boiling it for one minute.

Throughout the water crisis, Joe Jenkins, Atlanta VA Medical Center Emergency Management Officer, said the medical center leadership team moved quickly to accommodate patients, continue care and assist several of its community clinics in DeKalb County.

Jenkins, an Army veteran, pointed out how the medical center’s water tower helped to minimize disruption and maintain water service throughout the crisis. Built in 2013, the water tower Jenkins explained, has a 750,000 gallon capacity and is capable of supplying the entire medical center with a sustained water supply of up to 96 hours.

“With situations like this one in mind, the Department of Veterans Affairs decided to invest in a water tower and it definitely paid off,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins noted how well the medical center’s entire Emergency Management team responds to such crisis. “We take a very collaborative approach and always plan for the worst case scenario,” said Jenkins.
