DECATUR, Ga. - The dedicated staff of the Atlanta VA Medical Center (VAMC) routinely provide high quality health care for our veterans. From time to time complicated and complex cases come up that require dedication, creativity and ingenuity to meet the health care needs of aveteran. This was the case during the week of July 27, 2015, when outstanding staff from social work service and nurses on the 10th Floor Medical Telemetry unit partnered together to go above and beyond to meet the needs of one Veteran.

Under the leadership of Sun’ja Watson, the nursing staff on 10 Medicine provided outstanding care for this veteran and worked collaboratively with Kajuana Pitts and a team of three social workers to ensure that this veteran returned home and had appropriate outpatient follow up care. While this may seem like a normal, everyday occurrence, in this case the individual was thousands of miles from their home in Colorado. Pitts and her team worked with the Atlanta VAMC transportation staff to arrange for a flight home for this individual. They then worked tirelessly with VA staff and friends of the veteran to ensure that appropriate follow up appointments were scheduled upon returning home.

Both Watson and Pitts praise their staff for their work on this complex case. Watson pointed out that nurses and nursing assistants of the 10 Medical Telemetry unit used a team approach to provide stellar care for a veteran experiencing a uniquely challenging set of circumstances. “The staff was attentive to not only his physical needs, but cared for the veteran in a holistic manner,” Watson said. “They provide that same high level quality of care to all veterans encountered on a daily basis, with cheer and enthusiasm.” Pitts explained that “as social workers we wear many hats. At the end of the day, the veteran is what’s important—that’s what we’re here for.”
