Atlanta VA Medical Center Director Leslie Wiggins recently hosted Reuben Green, Cobb County Superior Court Judge, for a tour of the Atlanta VA Homeless program at the Ft. McPherson campus. Green, a Marine Veteran, currently presides over the Cobb County Veterans Court, a court designed to provide rehabilitation versus punishment for veterans with less serious crimes.
“The Healthcare for Homeless Veteran program has been operational at the Atlanta VAMC since 1987 and was designed to identify, engage, and specifically assist those homeless veterans with substance abuse and, or psychiatric diagnosis,” said April Edwards, chief of the Homeless Program. “We work closely with the Veterans Court to ensure our most at risk veterans are provided the opportunity for rehabilitation through our facility and community, instead of jail time.”
Throughout the tour Green viewed how the comprehensive Homeless program works hand-in-hand with the Veterans Court, engaged with veterans in various stages of their rehabilitation, and learned more about mental health, substance abuse, and women veteran services.
“This was a great opportunity for us to welcome someone who works tirelessly for our veterans,” said Leslie Wiggins, director. “He’s on our side, and it was my pleasure to show him that with his help, together we are rehabilitating veterans.”
