ATLANTA - September is National Preparedness Month, and the Atlanta VA Medical Center encourages employees and Veterans to make disaster preparedness a priority.
“National Preparedness Month serves as a reminder that we all need to prepare for disasters and emergencies,” said Joe Jenkins, Atlanta VA Medical Center Emergency Management Officer.
Jenkins, an Army veteran, explained how severe weather and other emergencies can strike with little or no warning and can have disastrous impacts. “In the state of Georgia, we are seeing disasters increase in their size and complexity, and they are occurring with greater frequency,” said Jenkins.
Jenkins added that the impact of such disasters should remind everyone to make preparedness a priority and encouraged all employees and veterans to cultivate a culture of readiness.
“It is imperative that we all stay vigilant because most disasters do not come with a warning,” Jenkins said.
Throughout the year, the Atlanta VA Medical Center Emergency Management Office conducts training exercises to keep employees aware of easy ways to stay prepared and safe during emergencies.
