DECATUR, Ga. - The Atlanta VA Medical Center received one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can obtain: Magnet Recognition Program Re-Designation for excellence in nursing services by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

The Atlanta VAMC is one of four VA medical centers to currently be recognized with Magnet Recognition Program status and is one of an elite group of six Georgia hospitals with this honor. The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes health care organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. The ANCC’s Magnet Recognition Program is the leading source of successful nursing practices and strategies worldwide.

“Magnet Recognition Program re-designation is a major milestone in our organization’s efforts to demonstrate quality and excellence,” said Sandy Leake, Chief Nursing Officer. “It shows Veterans that they are indeed in the best hands for nursing care when they come to the Atlanta VA medical center.”
Magnet Recognition Program status is held by less than 7 percent of health care organizations in the United States and is the gold standard for nursing excellence. It is a sign to patients that they can expect to receive a higher level of care and have better quality outcomes. Nurses find that Magnet facilities emphasize research and measuring quality outcomes and have higher retention rates for nurses.

The Atlanta VAMC has participated in the rigorous application and review process governed by the ANCC. This included submitting a lengthy written document, hosting a site visit this summer for a team of appraisers and thoroughly reviewing the medical center’s nursing services, clinical outcomes, and quality of patient care.
