The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) has declared April Occupational Therapy month!
Occupational therapy is a rehabilitation profession that helps individuals participate in everyday activities or occupations. Occupational therapists specialize in evaluating and treating physical, emotional, and cognitive changes resulting from illness and disability.
In the Army, OTs practice in outpatient orthopedics (i.e. hand therapy), behavioral health, and mild traumatic brain injury (or concussion) care. Occupational therapists deploy with combat and operational stress control (COSC) units and serve as chiefs of concussion care centers in combat environments to ensure troops are coping well and take a knee as needed to heal and return to the fight as healthy, effective warriors.
Occupational therapists also work in Warrior Transition Battalion to help injured soldiers transition to a meaningful, independent, and fulfilling life outside the military.
To celebrate OT month and promote the profession, the occupational therapy clinic at WBAMC will be holding an open-house on April 26, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Come meet your dynamic, creative occupational therapy staff and learn more about this unique rehabilitation profession.
