CAMP ZAMA, Japan (May 15, 2016) – Several of Camp Zama’s community members, including military, Family Members and Local National Employees, participated in the annual Triathlon competition held May 7 at Yano Fitness Center on the Camp Zama installation.

The Triathlon is a part of Camp Zama’s Commander’s Cup competition, which included a 200m swim, 10km of cycling, and a 3km run.

Gregory Zaboski, sports specialist for Yano, said it was a “great turn-out,” with about 30 community members participating in the event, which was more compared to last year’s Triathlon competition.

Top finishers for the competition were:

For the Women’s Category: Melanie Kincaid, Family Member representing 441st Military Intelligence Battalion, finished in first place with a time of 1:12:29.99; 1st Lt. Chelsea Sebal, assigned to 441st MI Bn., finished in second place with a time of 1:19:16.75; Maritere Rodriguez, assigned to 441st MI Bn., finished in third place with a time of 1:28:18.62.

For the Men’s Category: Yuichi Imada, LNE of U.S. Army Garrison Japan, finished in first place with a time of 52:48.46; Lt. Col. Aaron Angell, assigned to US Army Aviation Battalion, finished in second place with a time of 55:18.06; Nanjo Mamoru, representing U.S. Army Japan, finished in third place with a time of 1:3:50.81.

Kincaid said her favorite part of the event was getting on her bike; however, the swimming portion was a challenge, since she hasn’t swam since last summer.

“I want to see more girls out here,” said Kincaid. “I know that there’s a lot of super athletic women out there… they just need to come out, give us some competition.”

Imada said his favorite part was the biking portion of the competition.

“I got a strong tail wind and it helped me whoosh,” he said.

Zaboski said the Triathlon competition is part of the sixth U.S. Army Installation Management Command's annual Strong B.A.N.D.S. (Balance, Activity, Nutrition, Determination and Strength) campaign, and May is recognized as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.

The Strong B.A.N.D.S campaign includes local events such as a golf tournaments, Zumba classes, the grand opening of the Sagamihara Family Housing Area pool and outdoor recreational adventures.

The Commander’s Cup events including kickball, softball, basketball and flag football tournaments are other avenues of general physical fitness held throughout the year.

“We are promoting health, physical fitness, balance, nutrition and everything that boosts camaraderie, and esprit de corps,” said Zaboski.
