CINCU, Romania — Soldiers of the 166th Engineer Company out of Winfield, Ala., Alabama Army National Guard, are participating in Resolute Castle 16 from May 20 to June 10, 2016 in Cincu, Romania. Resolute Castle 16 is a multinational training and infrastructure improvement mission with U.S. Army forces and NATO allies working hand-in-hand to build strong partnerships.

These soldiers will be doing so while improving infrastructure in four European countries including Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Estonia. RC 16 is part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, which is a U.S. Army and Europe-led multinational operation. RC 16 allows U.S. Soldiers to cross-train and work with NATO allies in order to build partnerships, learn valuable communication skills, and improve infrastructure for NATO countries.

Their mission during their rotation is to assist in constructing various multipurpose buildings on Cincu Training Range. They are working with engineers from the Romanian Land Forces to improve infrastructure that will enhance their military training. An additional aspect to their rotation is training on construction safety and proper building procedures. Sgt. 1st Class Terry Glover, Quality Control, 194th Civil Engineer Battalion, Tennessee Army National Guard, gave a safety class for the Alabama Army National Guard Soldiers and the Romanian Land Forces engineers. He covered various aspects of construction safety and procedure including site leveling and preparation, reference points, batter boards, slump testing and concrete testing and curing.

Soldiers on the job site possess various skills including plumbing, electrical, masonry and carpentry. Sgt. 1st Class Glover said that this safety class would benefit them since some of them are new to the carpentry process. “Electricians and plumbers need to know how to safely work on this job site,” he stated. “This safety class will introduce basic knowledge of the site.”

During the class, Soldiers practiced using different tools used to ensure the posts were level, corners were squared and stakes were secure. This was useful for all involved as it reiterated skills the carpenters use regularly and introduced basic steps for the electricians and plumbers.

“They get to work with another’s culture while also doing their job,” said 1st Lt. Charles Montgomery, vertical site officer-in-charge, Alabama Army National Guard. He said that this experience will help them with future endeavors; whether it be working stateside or deployed.

Training will continue in conjunction with the construction work that is taking place on Cincu Training Range.
