The 147th FSC was recognized by their leadership and asked to compete in the Philip A. Connelly Awards Program that acknowledges excellence in food service in the nation’s Active Army, Reserve and National Guard units.
“I thought it was awesome when they first told us we were going compete for the Connelly,” said Pfc. Hailey Mcwane, food service specialist from the 147th FSC. “It gives us a chance to truly show off what we can do.”
The International Food Service Executives Association committee members evaluated the unit during the lunch meal. This meal fed 100 Soldiers working in the Pierre area during the 32nd Golden Coyote training exercise. The evaluators used a checklist of items to score the crew in areas such as preparation, supervision, teamwork and sanitation.
“It is a competition of everything from area set up, paperwork, technical manuals and the most important, what my cooks are doing,” said Staff Sgt. Wayne Rabine, food service manager from the 147th. “Once you get it all made and on the line, it’s all about serving sizes and making sure that the first plate looks like the last.”
It takes a team to win the Connelly Award, many members of the147th FSC had a hand in the competition. Even wheeled vehicle mechanics were judged when they manned the sanitary station and kept track of how many Soldiers came to eat.
“If it wasn’t for my supply sergeant, commander and support from brigade, we couldn’t do this. It takes a lot of time and effort from everybody to compete,” said Rabine.
The winner of the Connelly Award takes months to determine. Overall, the length of the competition is about nine months, declaring a winner no later than January 15th, 2017.
