INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana National Guard Soldiers and Airmen of the Indiana National Guard are still in action in the southwestern region of the state, but activity has peaked as the teams go into standby mode and await new orders.

Joint Task Force - 81 continues sandbagging operations in New Harmony and East Mount Carmel, Ind. They are reinforcing levees to protect essential structures such as the well and water treatment facility in New Harmony and an access road to the Duke Energy Power Plant, in East Mount Carmel, one of the largest coal fired power plants in the nation.

While the bags are being placed in those locations, they are being filled in Vincennes, Ind. for continuous distribution as requested by the local authorities.

There are approximately 160 troops in Vincennes running central operations for the Wabash Valley. An additional 327 Soldiers and Airmen are in Mt. Carmel, 100 in New Harmony and 224 remain in Terre Haute for local support.

Small contingencies of support personnel are also located in Jasonville, Elnora, Columbus and Edinburgh, Ind. where humanitarian aid and assistance is being offered to the local agencies and citizens in the form of water distribution, security and transportation assets.

Emergency management officials are closely monitoring the affects of the rain from yesterday, and JTF 81 will continue to provide support to local authorities until no longer needed.

On June 13, Kentucky National Guard sent its Joint Incident Site Communications Capability system to Vincennes, Ind. The JISCC provides additional communications systems to the local, state and federal agencies that respond during emergencies.
