Tikrit, Iraq – Despite the windy weather, around forty men came out to play golf for an 18-hole scramble during the Father's Day Golf Tournament, June 15, at Speicher Golf Course located at Contingency Operating Base Speicher, in Tikrit, Iraq.
"The first rule today, above all, is to have fun," announced Master Sgt. James McMillion Jr., the master of ceremonies for the tournament and a co-designer for the newly constructed golf course.
After the scramble rules were read all of the 18 two-man teams set out with their clubs in hand for the sandy green to have some fun.
"I'm here to celebrate Father's Day, but mainly just to golf. I flew this morning so it's nice to just spend the day golfing," grinned Chief Warrant Officer Jeremiah Johnson an attack helicopter pilot with 1st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Infantry Division.
Wind howling and sand swirling in every direction, the men continued to play on even when a ball or two disappeared into the distance.
"A little bit too much power," laughs Lt. Col. Michael Mahony, the 1-1 ARB commander, as the wind swallowed the ball he hit. As the ball disappeared he screamed at it, "bite, bite...bite up!" with excitement.
Among the sportsmanlike banter, father's discussed what they got for Father's Day between drives, chips and putts.
Video games, DVD's, coffee, energy bars and handmade cards from their children were a few items some of the men received, explained Cpt. Stephan Arnold, an aviator battle captain with the 1-1 ARB.
Playing golf on Father's Day, a great way to spend a Sunday and have some fun.
