    Commander, Navy Recruiting Command

Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) held its Inaugural Diversity Awareness Day at command headquarters in Millington on July 28.
The purpose of the event was to showcase the Navy’s inclusiveness to people with differing races, national origins, sexual orientations, genders, religions and disabilities.
The event kicked off with opening remarks from Rear Adm. Jeffrey W. Hughes, commander, NRC.
“When I think about diversity, I think about it in an organizational context, I think about it in a community context, and within a family context,” said Hughes. “For me, it’s really about what does everyone bring to the table? Different perspectives, values, experiences, that’s what makes anything better. It certainly affects us as an organization. We rely on everybody’s contribution, everybody’s input, and it’s important that we celebrate that diversity of thought and experience that they bring.”
Immediately following the remarks, the command held a potluck featuring dishes from many different cultures and walks of life.
The theme for the day was “Through Diversity We Are Stronger.”
“I feel that the theme for this event represents what America is all about,” said Chief Navy Counselor Tara Concepcion, head of the Diversity Awareness Day committee. “Working together and embracing everything that our Sailors and civilians can bring to the table is what has always made our Navy the most powerful maritime force that has ever existed.”
As part of the festivities, members of the command created displays to show the diversity in their offices.
“The displays that our command came up with were awesome,” said Personnel Specialist 3rd Class Isaiah Tapia, personnel clerk at NRC. “This whole event was a good opportunity to learn more about the diverse makeup that our command has and to celebrate those differences because instead of dividing us, those differences make us stronger.”
The overall mission of NRC is to acquire America's best talent for the Navy by accessing high quality Sailors and officers and achieve all recruiting goals.
