Lawson won the MHS Military Nursing Leadership Excellence Award, junior Navy category—the second honor awarded to him this year after he won the Anesthesia Clinical Instructor of the Year Award in May.

Toone was selected as one of three Navy nominees for the 2016 MHS Female Physician Leader Award, senior category.

The awards recognize those who have made significant contributions to military medicine and serve as exemplary role models to military doctors and nurses.

“It was a proud moment for me to hear that I won the award,” said Lawson.

Lawson’s several achievements include being the first nurse to ever be designated as an Associate Master Clinician at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. While an independent anesthesia provider in Qalat, Afghanistan, he performed more than 100 trauma resuscitations, 90 surgical trauma surgeries and five mass casualties with a 94 percent survival rate.

“What I have to offer to the navy is experience,” said Lawson. “I take pride in my job and I’m confident in succeeding in ensuring maximum health and readiness of the crew. I’m proud to have the opportunity to serve the people.”

Toone served as the SMO aboard USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), directing medical care in 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility, coordinating 69 medical evacuations in six different countries, and recovering two aviators lost over the Aegean Sea, ensuring their safe return home to their families, among a number of other major achievements.

“I’m honored to be nominated,” said Toone. “More than being recognized as a female, I am proud to be a naval officer, and that’s what makes this special.”

“The job provides so many challenges that my civilian counterparts won’t ever face, but it’s also very rewarding,” said Toone. “Everything is for the Sailors, both the present and future crews of this ship.”
