During the ceremony, the emcee stated the event formally appoints and recognizes those selected to assume the responsibilities of crew chiefs. Their designated roles are a unique opportunity which demand every day be met with pride, professionalism, and enthusiasm by those who crew the C-17 Globemaster III and the E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System.
Each role plays a significant part in the aviation world. The dedicated crew chief of each aircraft manages the teams and supervises maintenance both on station and at temporary duty locations. The assistant dedicated crew chief ensures task assigned by the dedicated crew chief are accomplished in a timely manner, and step in when the dedicated crew chief is unavailable. The flying crew chief accompanies the aircrews on each off-station mission and is responsible for the safe repair and generation of the aircraft.
“You have been selected from your peers based on your initiative, management, and leadership abilities, as well as your technical knowledge to perform all maintenance actions to best of your abilities and to the highest standards,” said Chief Master Sgt. Jason Morgan, 703rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron superintendent, while reading the dedicated and flying crew chief charter. “Being a DCC and FCC isn’t just dedication to an aircraft; it’s a dedication to the flight crews who fly on the aircraft. It is your responsibility to ensure every screw has been tightened, every rivet secured, and every system serviced so that the crew knows the number of takeoffs will equal their number of landings.”
The ACC, DCC and FCC are solely responsible and accountable for safe repair and generation.
“The airplane is an extension of you and your persona, its evidence of pride in ownership – you are the real crew chief,” Morgan said. “[To the] dedicated crew chiefs, you are the lead dog of that aircraft – its owner and manager. [To the] flying crew chiefs, you are the “on road” expert…. the jack of all trades and production coordinator. [To the] assistant crew chiefs, you are growing into each of these roles and aspiring to be “that guy.”
The benefits of having these roles in an assigned aircraft is that they are usually the first selected to accompany their aircraft through scheduled inspections and other TDY assignments around the world.
As each member was congratulated, they all echoed the same testament that being selected is an honor and privilege working on the aircraft.
“There is an element of pride when you see your name on the jet,” Airman 1st Class Damien Sloan, 517th Aircraft Maintenance Unit assistant dedicated crew chief said. “Someone can look at that aircraft and it’s a reflection of you and the work you put out. The recognition is great, but we don’t need it to do the job.”
It is also an honor to be trusted with the aircraft and to bring back the crew home safely, added Air Force Staff Sgt. Justin Gabert, 962nd Aircraft Maintenance Unit dedicated crew chief.
