FORT IRWN, Calif-U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Deputy Commanding General for Military and International Operations Maj. Gen. Mark Yenter toured several Los Angeles District projects at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, during a visit here May 15.
Yenter is responsible for policy, programming and technical support in the execution of more than $18 billion of design, construction and environmental programs for the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, other Department of Defense and Federal agencies, and foreign countries.
Yenter, accompanied by Maj. Scotty Autin, deputy commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District, toured ongoing military construction projects, including the new Weed Army Community Hospital and the recently completed Fort Irwin Water Works, a water treatment plant construction project. After the tour, Yenter met with Corps employees and briefed them about some of the Corps’ current missions, providing an overview on how and where they are being executed.
“I will tell you that the bottom line is that the workload for the Corps in military programs is changing, and it’s increasing, but it’s not MILCON [Military Construction] necessarily. It’s kind of uneven how it’s being distributed. Because we are an enterprise, it’s actually being distributed across the entire enterprise and across all of the districts in the enterprise,” said Yenter.
USACE’s mission is to deliver vital public and military engineering services; partnering in peace and war to strengthen our Nation’s security, energize the economy and reduce risks from disasters.
“By far, almost three-quarters of the workload in USACE is in Military Programs, and roughly about a third goes to the Civil Works side of the house,” said Yenter. “So this is what we do around the world as we focus on military construction to the Army and Air Force and support to the rest of DoD, to include the missile defense agency.”
After his briefing, Yenter presented commander’s coins to Corps team members in recognition of their outstanding work.
The Los Angeles District provides engineering, construction, real estate, stability operations, and environmental management products and services for the Army, Air Force, and other assigned U.S. Government agencies within its operational foot print.
