The community hands-on event featured the city's safety departments' vehicles and equipment to include, police, emergency medical services (EMS) and the fire department. The citizens of Cary were able to get up-close and personal with each of the represented groups, while learning about the city's safety initiatives and to register for free home inspections.
One of the more popular events was a K9 team from the police department. This law enforcement team consists of a working dog and a police officer that share a close knit bond developed through intense training. The K9 team's demonstration impressed everyone in the crowd with their skills and their ablility to work side-by-side.
While the Town of Cary Safety Day's attractions where entertaining, Cary Police corporal Christopher Redig, the Cary Police Department's public services officer, related that the event's real intention is to increase the public's awareness of their first responders roles and the services they offer to them.
"Community outreach is important in maintaining our role in keeping the public safe. It is really important to build and maintain a strong relationship with the public so that we can better serve them in both their time of crisis and interacting with them in the normal day to day routines like policing the community," said Redig.
Steven Cohen the Chief of the Cary EMS agreed with the importance of keeping strong community ties. However, he knows that the public is understandingly nervous when they have to call upon his services so he takes advantage of any opportunity that his department gets to engage the public.
"This event is a fantastic opportunity to help get the word out about public safety and what we do in both emergency and non emergency situations. Participating in these types of events allow the public to interact with our services using activities like exploring an ambulance and also answering any questions they may have which eases their anxiety when we are called upon to assist them in an emergency situation," said Cohen.
The Town of Cary Safety Day will be replacing the Cary Night Out event which featured similar attractions, in an effort to attract more people, making the first responder services community outreach efforts more effective.
