    311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

DUBLIN, Calif. – Col. Toni Glover, 650th Regional Support Group commander, traveled to the Camp Parks Reserve Forces Training Area June 9-10 to support her Soldiers, competing in the 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command’s Combat Fitness Challenge.

The 650th Regional Support Group’s CFC was a preliminary round, introducing “The Year of Fitness,” which was established by Brig. Gen. David Elwell, 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command commanding general. This new fitness event allows both officers and enlisted Soldiers to compete head to head in a series of rigorous athlete events.

“This Combat Fitness Challenge provides a unique opportunity for healthy, safe and exciting competition amongst Soldiers throughout my command, all while improving readiness and identifying the fittest Soldiers. I’m proud of my team who have planned and executed every part of this event, which was conducted smoothly,” said Glover. “And, I am sure that a 650th Regional Support Group Soldier will win the final phase.”

Physical fitness is one of the cornerstones of combat readiness because being physically fit enables the Soldier to be mission ready. At the 650th RSG, the focus is on fitness being a condition of service in the Army Reserve so that one is ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.

Maj. Anthony Anderson, 650th RSG officer in charge, and Command Sgt. Maj. Darin Daniels, 650th RSG command sergeant major, along with other staff members, planned and executed the event and ensured the event lived up to all of the hype and challenges.

The design of this event is based on ancient training philosophies with current physical and mental challenges. To be a competitor in the CFC the Soldier must have scored a 270 or better on his Army Physical Fitness Test, and be green in Medical Readiness. The top five competitor’s male/female from this event will move on to compete at the 311th ESC level.

“Our goal was to create a crucible type challenge that will define the best, test physical and mental toughness with the intent to spark others and increase deployable readiness. All done in a safe, challenging and fun environment,” said Lt. Col. Paul Tieszen, 311th ESC chief of operations. “This brigade level competition will test and determine the physical best of the best. The top five males and top five females will move on to the 311th ESC finals in September.”

The 311th ESC introduced the Combat Fitness Challenge as a means to recognize those who excel in fitness. Distinguishing, while challenging, those combat physically fit leaders to be examples for fitness readiness and role models of their units.

The 650th’s CFC was an extreme challenge that tested the Soldiers both physically and mentally. The event tested their resolve and was uniquely different because it gave junior enlisted, NCOs and officers an opportunity to participate in the same competition. The CFC competition will set a new standard and promote change that can help Soldiers who will commit to health as a lifestyle.

Command Sgt. Maj. Daniels had a positive and encouraging encounter with Soldiers from Camp Parks. When those Soldiers asked Daniels what competition was being conducted, he explained, “A new competition where enlisted personnel and officers could compete head to head in the same event,” and many of them responded, “Where do we sign up?”

"This is the perfect opportunity to engage Soldiers, regardless of rank, to display their talent and challenge their own personal fitness goals while building camaraderie and team spirit. These Soldiers are among the elite officers, NCO's and junior enlisted within our brigade,” said Daniels. “They all came with the "can do" attitude and the unwavering desire to win. At the end of each day of competition, they still wanted to know ‘What next!’"

The CFC competition was conducted over two days. During the first day morning, competitors performed pushups, curl-ups, dead hang pull-ups and dead hang chin-ups, concluding with a 1.5 mile run for time in ACU uniform. In the afternoon, competitors ran a 10 kilometer run for time.

During the second day morning, competitors performed pushups, curl-ups, dead hang pull-ups, and air squats, concluding with a 1.5 mile run for time. In the afternoon, competitors completed a 10 kilometer ruck march with a 35 pound ruck for time.

The winners of the 650th CFC will go on to compete at the 311th ESC competition planned for early September 2017. Those winners will have the opportunity to attend, Airborne, Air Assault, Pathfinder or potentially other Army schools.

The 650th RSG top male winner was Sgt. Jesus Ruiz-Garcia, 469th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, Mountain View, Calif., and the top female winner was Sgt. Rosaura Serrano-Sanchez, 483rd Transportation Company, Vallejo, Calif.

Other Soldiers who competed and will advance to the 311th CFC competition include: Spc. Alan Flenner, Spc. Roberto Cintora, Sgt. Abrahan Fuerte, Pfc. Jaime Alfarolara, Capt. Teresa Gonzalez, Staff Sgt. Megan Mijares, Sgt. Esmeralda Blankenship and Spc. Summer Sohn.

The 650th RSG is aligned under the 311th Sustainment Command and has control of three battalions: 314th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 469th CSSB and the 483rd Transportation Battalion. Its area of operation spans over three states, including California, Nevada and Arizona.
