TBILISI, Georgia — Eight countries participating in Exercise Noble Partner paid respect to the August War heroes prior to the annual commemoration ceremony of Georgia's fallen soldiers, Mukhatgverdi Cemetery, Tbilisi, Aug. 8, 2017.
Exercise Noble Partner is a multinational, U.S. Army Europe-led exercise conducting home station training for the Georgian light infantry company designated for the NATO Response Force.
The August War, as called by the people of Georgia, refers to the 2008 conflict which resulted in the deaths of 228 civilians, 170 soldiers and 14 police officers from the Georgian population.
The violent event remains a painful memory for those who lost loved ones or were displaced from their homes.
"It's important to commemorate those that fell, our comrades in arms, in the wars that preceded us," said U.S. Army Col. Dennis Wille, deputy exercise director for Noble Partner, U.S. Army Europe. "It helps us remember what we do, with our training to prepare for future war."
Several leaders from all eight countries participated in the annual commemoration.
The eight nations agreed the only response was to honor the fallen of Georgia by sending select soldiers from each nation to represent the whole.
"Regardless of the training schedule, it's important to always take time to participate in these type of events," Wille said. "It helps us remember our history and helps us remember those who came before us."
