It's a quiet Sunday morning at the Hawaiian Humane Society until the sound of wagging tails and barks was heard throughout the kennel.
U.S. Marines with the Single Marine and Sailor Program aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii came to volunteer at the Hawaiian Humane Society in Honolulu, Hawaii on Aug. 20, 2017.
“The Single Marine and Sailor Program gives us the chance to get out of the barracks,” said Lance Cpl. Andrew Oziemkiewicz, an airframe mechanic with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463. “It gives us the opportunity to participate in the community, whether it’s a fun activity or a volunteer event.”
Oziemkiewicz also said that the SMSP gets U.S. Marines and Sailors out of their rooms, because they offer so many activities to do more.
“I love volunteering,” said Lance Cpl. Jordan Durkee, an aircraft rescue and firefighter with Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay. “I haven’t pet an animal in over eight months. This is therapeutic for me just as it is for the dog. I love the fun activities like day trips to surf or to another island too. We’re always doing something”
Durkee also said that volunteering and helping out the community gives him a sense of accomplishment, and without the SMSP he wouldn’t have that feeling.
“This is my second time this month volunteering here,” Durkee said. “The SMSP and the Humane Society have a bond, where we come and volunteer here three times a month every few months.”
Oziemkiewicz added that this was his first time volunteering at the humane society but he will definitely be volunteering in the future, because the staff at the Humane Society is wonderful and the animals are amazing to be around.
“We have a lot of animals and not a lot of help,” said Shelly Pang, a dog care taker at the Hawaiian Humane Society. “It’s helpful when we have volunteers.”
Pang also said that the SMSP come volunteer often and their help is always appreciated because they are respectful, helpful, and absolutely wonderful with the animals.
“I love when the Marines come,” said Pang. “They look just as happy as the dogs when they come and volunteer.”
