HOKKAIDO, Japan — U.S. Marines from the 12th Marine Artillery Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force and artillerymen from the 11th Artillery Unit, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, participated in a large-scale live-fire mission rehearsal known as Northern Viper Aug. 9 - 26, 2017.
During the exercise, Marines and JGSDF soldiers demonstrated their ability to mutually support targeting and coordination of fires in unfamiliar terrain.
“Bilateral training between the USMC and JGSDF strengthens our partnership through increased familiarity, proficiency, and knowledge of our respective tactics, techniques, and procedures,” said Lt. Col. Joshua Randall, the operations officer for 12th Marines.
For the first time, Marines and JGSDF soldiers coordinated their fires to mutually support allied targeting during the exercise.
"This bilateral training enabled the massing of fires quickly, accurately and safely,” said Randall. “It’s critical to being able to aid in the defense of our allies.”
Northern Viper continues through the end of August and is designed to enhance the collective defense capabilities between the U.S. and Japanese forces.
