DEVESELU, Romania (September 11, 2017) Sailors assigned to Naval Support Facility (NSF) Deveselu attended the opening ceremony of the Deveselu Elementary School, September 11.
Eight Sailors and civilians from NSF Deveselu, co-located on board the 99th Romanian Military Base in southern Romania, attended the ceremony held on the first day of the new school year. For more than a year now the command has devoted time each month to the cleaning, painting and preparation of the school as part of an ongoing community relations project (COMREL).
The opening ceremony was held in the school’s courtyard with over 200 students, faculty and guests in attendance. The school was originally constructed in August 2015 as a donation from the United States through their partnership with the people of Romania and has a student body of 250 children aged 3 to 14-years-old.
Cmdr. Catherine Eyrich, the executive officer of NSF Deveselu, addressed the student body as they prepare to start a new school year. She shared her three keys to a successful school year with her young audience: to be kind, work hard and always be honest. Eyrich finished her remarks by reemphasizing her keys to success and pledging to continue to work with the school throughout the year.
Several NSF Deveselu Sailors in attendance were greeted by smiling faces and presented with bouquets of flowers from some of the students.
“Since I checked on board in January we have come to the school at least once a month to help clean, do maintenance and get it ready for the new school year,” said Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Isaiah Sambol, NSF Deveselu’s COMREL coordinator. “When we come here everybody is so thankful and all the kids are happy to see us, that’s what we’re here for, to make them happy.”
The ceremony concluded with a rush of young students heading off to class and posing for photos with some of the Sailors.
NSF Deveselu was established October 2014 and houses the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System Romania which was operationally certified in May 2016. The base is home to almost 200 U.S. Navy Sailors and civilian contractors. They serve as the first operational Aegis defense command in Europe. The partnership between the Romanian and U.S. militaries serves to support ballistic missile defense and security in the 6th Fleet area of operations.
