With Governor Deal's approval, General Joseph Lengyel, Chief of National Guard Bureau, nominated Brigadier General Thomas M. Carden, Georgia’s Assistant Adjutant General - Army, to serve as Deputy Commander of NATO’s Multi-National Division, Southeast, headquartered in Bucharest, Romania. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff approved the nomination, and Carden will begin his new duties October 1, 2017.

“I am very pleased our military leadership at the national level has recognized what we in Georgia already know, and that is the outstanding abilities of Brig. Gen. Tom Carden,” said Governor Nathan Deal. “His service to our state and nation has been exemplary and I look forward to seeing his leadership impact our total force as well as that of our NATO allies.”

Carden has served in the Georgia Army National Guard since 1986, rising from private to commanding general.

“Carden is one of the finest officers with whom I have had the honor and pleasure to serve,” said Maj. Gen. Joe Jarrard, Adjutant General of Georgia. “We will miss his untiring energy and servant leadership but wish him the best in this critical assignment.”

Deal will appoint Col. Randall Simmons to serve as the Georgia National Guard’s Assistant Adjutant General-Army.

“Colonel Randall Simmons is a proven leader both here in Georgia and overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Deal. “I am glad to appoint someone with his significant experience and qualifications as the Assistant Adjutant General and Commander of our Army National Guard.”

Simmons has served as the Chief of Staff for the Georgia Army National Guard since 2015. He previously served as commander of the Macon-based 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and led the brigade during its 2013-2014 deployment to Afghanistan.

“Simmons is an exceptional leader who is very well respected not only within Georgia, but throughout the Army,” Jarrard stated. “I am very confident that under his leadership, the Georgia Army National Guard will continue to set the standard for readiness and maintain our outstanding reputation.”
