Lt. Gen. Ihor Kolesnyk, the first deputy chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, visited the Yavoriv Combat Training Center for a brief on the functions and purpose of a CTC, Sept. 23.
During his visit to the CTC on the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in Western Ukraine, Kolesnyk was briefed by leaders of the Yavoriv CTC and was joined by officers from the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine and staff from the 1st Battalion, 95th Separate Airmobile Brigade, a Ukrainian army unit that recently finished a training rotation at the CTC.
Units like the 95th conduct 55-day training rotations where they learn individual skills like basic rifle marksmanship – taught by Yavoriv CTC trainers – and build to battalion-level computerized and field training exercises that pit the training unit against the CTC’s opposing force battalion.
The aim of the Yavoriv CTC is to train and certify units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in accordance with NATO standards; to prepare soldiers, leaders, and units for operational missions around the globe; and to develop agile, adaptable, and competent leaders at all levels.
Kolesnyk was also briefed on the role the CTC plays in multinational exercises like Exercise Rapid Trident 2017, which was held on the base earlier this month and included more than 2,000 participants from 14 nations.
After the briefing was complete Kolesnyk observed CTC staff members lead a battalion-wide after action review where soldiers from the 1st. Bat., 95th Brig. were able to discuss how they performed during their training rotation.
After action reviews are a key part of the training at Yavoriv because they enable the training unit to identify what it does well and in what areas its soldiers need to improve. The AAR also allows the CTC to identify what areas it needs to focus on for upcoming rotations and how to better prepare those units.
