The Foster Girl Scouts gathered together to collect pajamas Dec. 10 at the Community Center aboard Camp Foster.

The meeting helped the Foster Girl Scout Juniors earn their Bronze Award by collecting donated pajamas for the Sunrin Orphanage near Pohang, Korea.

“The bronze award is the highest level of award a Girl Scout Junior can earn,” said Col. Maria McMillen, a volunteer with the Foster Girl Scouts and the assistant chief of staff for G-5, planning, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “What the girls do is look into the community and find a need, then they find a way they can help fill that need.”

With help from other Girl Scout troops and the Marine Officer's Spouses Club Okinawa, the Girl Scout Juniors were able to collect 80 pajamas, one for each child at the orphanage.

“It’s important for the girls to know that not everyone has the advantages that they do,” said Lance Cpl. Austyn Krecicki, a volunteer with the Foster Girl Scouts and a combat production specialist with Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations Pacific-Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Japan.

During the donation, leaders and parents explained to the girls why giving back to the community is so important and how they can make a lasting impression on someone else. The girls discussed reasons they were collecting the pajamas and what it meant to them to share with other children.

“The orphanage was started by III MEF Marines in 1952 towards the end of the Korean War,” said McMillen. “So this is an opportunity to give those children warm pajamas and something that tells them someone is thinking about them.”
