ADHAMIYAH, Iraq – A brief ceremony on a joint Iraqi security and coalition forces compound marked the culmination of five weeks of training for more than 20 men as they officially became members of the Iraqi national police.

"I'm very proud to protect the people of Iraq," said Kadhr Mahmoud Druish, a recent graduate and now a member of the Quick Reaction Force of the Sayafiyaa Battalion that operates in the Adhamiyah District of Baghdad.

The men paused to remember two classmates who were killed in the line of duty during training and were reminded to rely on their training when protecting the people of Iraq.

"They have an awesome sense of willingness to learn," said Capt. Chris Reed, a Riverside, Calif., native, who serves with the Sayafiyaa National Police Training Team, which is currently attached to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad.

During the five weeks of training, the men were instructed on weapons handling, medical skills, marksmanship and entering and clearing rooms.

"They wanted to do this to help make their city safer," said Sgt. 1st Class David Hunt, a Forsyth, Ga., native, who assisted in the training with the Sayafiyaa NPTT.

The men are now working as the Quick Reaction Force in northern Adhamiyah, able to respond at a moments notice to assist other Iraqi security forces in the region.

"I'm confident these men will represent the future of the Iraqi security forces well," Reed said.
