The Center for Surface Combat Systems Detachment (CSCS DET) Pearl Harbor recently hosted a unique training experience for veterans and active duty service members preparing to become certified Project Management Professionals (PMP).
A diverse mix of 24 veterans, service members and civilians attended the five-day course, conducted by the organization Vets2PM at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, Hawaii (JBPHH).
The PMP examination preparation course, or “Boot Camp,” is designed to familiarize military personnel with the material on the qualifying exam issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI).
“I thoroughly enjoyed the class and was very glad that the instructor focused the project management material and not just shortcuts or other gimmicks to pass the test,” said US Coast Guard Captain Jim Sutton, a course attendee. “I was very surprised how the framework aligned so closely with my military experience and wish I could have had this knowledge much earlier in my career.”
Project Management is an encouraged discipline by many LaDRs (Learning and Development Roadmaps, OPNAVINST 1500.77) which tells Sailors in the US Navy what to utilize in order to stay on course to a successful career. Air Force COOL and Navy COOL (Credentialing Opportunities On-Line) will help pay for the exam.
“I think it’s awesome that Navy COOL will pay for the exam. It would be great if they financially supported the training as well, the way Air Force COOL does,” said Electronics Technician 1st Class Jason Vandergiessen, an instructor at CSCS DET Pearl Harbor. “We should also consider adding PMP certifications towards an education point on advancement exams.”
Vets2PM has educated more than 900 military veterans all around the world since its inception in January 2015. It was founded by former Hull Maintenance Technician Eric A. Wright, who now has a PhD in Business Administration and is the CEO of Vets2PM.
“Over 130 alumni have earned their PMP certification, with more reporting having successfully passed each month,” said Dr. Wright. “Additionally, we've helped place veterans into their next career thanks to our employer partnerships and look forward to watching our JBPHH alumni thrive and find continued success.”
