Nevada Air Guardsmen, family members, friends and supporters gathered at the Eldorado Resort Casino’s Main Ballroom here in Reno on Saturday, January 6, 2018 to honor their outstanding Airmen of the year. It was a packed house of over 250 people. Capt. Sarah Searles, of the 192nd Airlift Squadron, opened the event by singing the National Anthem.

Prior to the announcement of the winners, State Command Chief, Chief Master Sgt. Michael Drisdale gave a few remarks.

“It is important to recognize these Airmen for their outstanding service to their unit, community and country. All nominees are deserving Airmen and have worked very hard to get to this point. We congratulate each and every one on a job well done!” he said.

The Airman of the Year award went to Senior Airman Andrew Marshall, 152nd Maintenance Squadron. Tech Sgt. Casey Jones, 152nd Maintenance Squadron, won the Noncommissioned Officer title. The Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year award went to Senior Master Sgt. Jeffrey Linton of the 152nd Logistics Readiness Squadron. Master Sgt. Adalberto Chavez of the 152nd Civil Engineer Squadron won First Sergeant of the Year. Honors for Company Grade Officer of the Year went to Capt. Reed Kobernik, 192nd Airlift Squadron. Rounding out the awards for the year was Honor Guard Member of the Year Senior Airman David Almada, 152nd Communications Flight.

Regarding his win in the Honor Guard Member of the Year category and how sometimes funny things happen when you are nervous, Almada had a comment. “I’ve was nominated three years ago and was so nervous forgot to salute Brig. Gen. Ondra Berry when I got up to the stage, and then I nervously left the stage. This time I made sure I told him that I saved this particular salute for him for the past couple of years, we had a good laugh about it,” he said.

He added that, "It has been a great journey to achieve this award. Now it's time to help other troops to reach the top of this mountain, so others may also enjoy the gratifying feeling of hard work."

The award winners were recognized for their outstanding performance this past year and will go on as representatives of Nevada as they compete at the national level.
