Naval Hospital Bremerton’s (NHB) Main Operating Room (OR) is officially a Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) Strong facility with 100 percent of the nursing team maintaining their CNOR credentials.
The Main OR staff has been formally recognized by the official credentialing body, Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI), which noted, ‘through its achievement of a high percentage of certified nurses, this facility advances a culture of patient safety.’
“Having 100 percent of the perioperative nurses at NHB attaining and maintaining their CNOR certification only speaks to the amazing Navy Perioperative Nurses I have the honor of representing as their Specialty Leader. I could not be more proud of my perioperative community and I am constantly humbled by the level of professionalism they display. It’s setting the bar high, achieving that level and showing others that it’s attainable,” said Cmdr. Richard Lawrence, Perioperative Nursing/CSSR Product Review Specialty Leader.
“This (is) awesome! What a great accomplishment. You all should be proud. This is a huge success for your command,” added Cmdr. John Broom, Navy Medicine Assistant Perioperative Nursing Specialty Leader.
Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Dewey, NHB Perioperative Services head and Nursing Standards and Practice Committee head, acknowledged that achieving such certification in a specialty denotes proficiency on top of the licensure as a nurse that is based on minimum competency.
“Having a high percentage of perioperative registered nurses certified shows an entire team dedicated to creating a culture of patient safety and extraordinary care. NHB currently at 100 percent CNOR certification shows that,” said Dewey, noting that individual perioperative nurses challenged and achieved their CNOR credentials to demonstrate their mastery of a rigorous body of knowledge in surgical nursing, and then apply that knowledge to their clinical practice.
The CNOR nursing team is made up of Cmdr. Fleming French, Cmdr. Chris Keith, Cmdr. Jill Skeet, Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Dewey, Lt. Cmdr. Reynalda McBee, Lt. Cmdr. Shelley Oehrlein, Lt. Travis Carr, Lt. Aaron Johnson, Lt. Kathryn Morris, and Mr. Stu Ewy.
“These nurses took the time to become experts in their field, a process that required hours of study and a very challenging exam. Attaining your CNOR is a deliberate act showing dedication to excellence,” Dewey said.
Navy perioperative nurses, like their civilian counterparts, are a specialty group working with patients who are having a surgical operation or another similar invasion procedure. They work in the Main OR setting alongside other specialty trained staff such as surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical technicians.
The benefits of the Main OR being a CNOR Strong Facility are overlapping. Perioperative nurses are now individually and collectively recognized for enhancing their specialty knowledge which directly impacts the entire Main OR staff and especially the Main OR patients.
“Patients coming into NHB’s Main OR can rest easy knowing they are cared for by professionals dedicated to being the absolute best they can be. These nurses, being subject matter experts, are able to function to the top of their potential and support the surgical team in the provision of safe and effective patient care,” commented Dewey.
According to CCI, some of the purposes for CNOR certification are to demonstrate concern for accountability to the general public for nursing practice, enhance quality patient care, and identify registered nurses who have demonstrated professional achievement in providing surgical nursing care.
Objectives of the CNOR certification include recognizing the individual registered nurse who is proficient by strengthening the conscious use of theory in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, as well as enhancing professional growth through continued learning that results in broader knowledge and expanded skills.
Results of a comprehensive study indicate that CNOR certification in the perioperative nurse community enhances they feelings of professional credibility, validates specialized perioperative nursing knowledge, and demonstrates their commitment to the highest level of patient care.
“Specialty certification is a mark of distinction and validates the professional accomplishments of the perioperative nurse in this case. Having our perioperative nurses attain this certification not only demonstrates their clinical skills and knowledge, it shows dedication to the specialty, the nursing profession, and most importantly the quality of care in the perioperative environment. Having our nurses constantly seeking to advance themselves professionally and personally furthers a culture of safety and will greatly contribute to the improved outcomes for our surgical patients,” related Lawrence.
The commitment to the highest level of patient care and a culture of safety in the Main OR has every perioperative nurse at NHB involved, with a 100 percent guarantee.
