Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Brandon Williams-Church

    USS Anchorage (LPD 23)

Offered twice a year, Adaptive Planning and Execution (APEX) is a two-week DoD-wide executive development opportunity designed to provide both a practical and theoretical understanding of the structure and processes of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Combatant Commands, the Joint Staff, and the Military Departments.

APEX exposes the executives to service and joint operating concepts and environments, and also provides them with “hands-on” experiences, as well as opportunities to interact with Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines. Additionally, APEX helps the new leaders gain an enterprise-wide perspective that encompasses expectations, opportunities, and challenges currently facing DoD leadership.

During the query portion of the session, Brown answered different questions, ranging from future Naval opportunities and ship capabilities, to weapons systems and counter-intelligence. Brown also spoke on the importance of continuity in the DoD in relation to the newly appointed executives.

“The thing that makes the U.S. Armed Forces so good is because of all the teamwork between the services,” said Brown. “As senior executives, you are vital to what we do.”

Additionally, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 3, Rear Adm. Cedric Pringle toured the ship with the executives. He also made remarks in the pilot house regarding the importance of the capabilities of Anchorage.

“I believe that this ship is one of the most well designed vessels in the Navy because of its versatile capabilities,” said Pringle. “When you have a ship that can do all of the things that Anchorage can do, you have a forward fighting Navy that is second to none.”

The executives took a tour of the ship’s main operational facilities including the well deck, combat information center, boat valley, and the bridge. The tour also went through Anchorage’s medical facilities, where the ship’s Senior Medical Officer explained the capabilities and services that the ship could provide. Learning about what the sailors do within each center of operation was informative for the newly appointed executives.
APEX encompasses planning detail, continuous assessment, and collaborative technology, providing increased opportunities for consultation and guidance during the planning process. APEX also encourages early, vigorous and frequent communication between DoD planners and their interagency and multinational counterparts throughout the planning process.

Anchorage is homeported in San Diego and currently in the integrated phase of deployment preparation. Anchorage will deploy as a part the Essex Amphibious Ready Group alongside 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to promote regional peace and stability.
