FORT STEWART, Ga. – The Soldiers responsible for Marne logistical support within the 3rd Sustainment Brigade Special Troops Battalion honed in on their basic Soldiering skills as they executed a base-defense live fire exercises at Fort Stewart, Georgia, April 3-5.
The participating components included Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield Soldiers from the 258th Movement Control Team, the 90th Human Resources Company and the 274th Movement Control Team.
“The exercise was held in conjunction with Soldiers from the different units to simulate a tactical environment with multiple units operating collectively to achieve the same mission, similar to what they may see on a deployment,” said 2nd Lt. Evan Farlow, platoon leader, 258th MCT.
Throughout the exercise, Soldiers gained knowledge and experience in the concept of unit area defense and worked toward proficiency in those collective tasks to meet the mission-essential task list task, Farlow said.
“Pulling all of those warrior tasks – individual Soldier tasks – we’re trying to pull that all together to achieve that main goal of base defense,” Farlow said.
Soldiers in the 3rd SB are responsible for providing logistical support to the 3rd Infantry Division, but while deployed, they take on the METL task of unit area defense said Maj. Scott Wellman, rear detachment commander to the Special Troops Battalion.
“The Special Troops Battalion is really a conglomerate of very specific sustainment companies – so every company has their own function,” Wellman said. “Usually a lot of garrison support missions, so we’re doing that, but every one of us has a unit defense METL task.”
As part of the exercise, Soldiers pulled security, fired rounds from towers toward a simulated enemy, reacted to chemical attacks and treated simulated casualties..
“We always train for events where we have to defend ourselves,” Wellman said.
Spc. Charon White, 258th MCT, said he found value in learning the safety parameters of learning how to do base defense. He felt very prepared leading up to the exercise following all of the training conducted with his unit.
“I felt very prepared and highly motivated, HOOAH,” White said. “The more training you get, the better Soldier you will be.”
