TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Members assigned to the 19th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and High-Yield Explosive Enhanced Response Force Package participated in an active-shooter exercise at Union Hospital April 12, 2018, Terre Haute, Indiana.
The 19th CERF-P provided supplies to aid doctors and nurses and also provided tents to represent the hospital.
“We wanted to gain more experience with the local authorities by providing resources and participating in the exercise,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Landon Hinman, Medical Plans and Operations Officer, 19th CERF-P, 181st Intelligence Wing.
The exercise involved staff from Union Hospital, Regional Hospital, Indiana State University and Ivy Tech Community College Nursing students, as well as many local authority units.
We never know when incidents like an active-shooter will happen, so training to make sure everyone is ready is important, said Michelle Ritchey, Union Hospital Trauma Program manager. It is important to have scenarios that could potentially save someone’s life.
Students from ISU and Ivy Tech served as role players in the exercise.
“I think it is very beneficial to have scenarios like this,” said Josh Rowe, a senior at the ISU School of Nursing. “To see how all the disciplines react to the situation gives us a better idea how work as a team.”
These types of exercises are crucial for the 19th CERF-P, as it helps build their skills and gives the public a chance to see what resources they can provide.
