MOSUL, Iraq - A generator was given to a local shop owner by Soldiers of 3rd Battalion, 9th Brigade, 3rd Iraqi Army Division, attached to 2nd Division IA in Mosul, Iraq during a mission to help stimulate the economy in the Al Karama area, Dec. 3.

"The idea was to get him a generator so he could run a business better and possibly hire some more people," said Staff Sgt. Seth Dinelt, civil affairs sergeant, Civil Affairs Team 15, Company B, 413th Civil Affairs Battalion. "Hopefully this'll have some economic stimulus for him and for the neighborhood too."

The locksmith and generator repairman's shop was found in need of a new generator to help the business stay productive during a recent assessment. Giving this one business a new generator should in the long run help all the shops in the area as a whole.

The Iraqi brigade also visited a medical clinic in Al Karama and asked if there was anything the staff or patients needed to improve the facility.

"First of all, we are trying to rebuild and remodel the schools, clinic and help people, so they will know we are here for everything, not only for security," said Maj. Muhammed Husin, executive officer, 3rd Battalion, 9th Brigade, 3rd Iraqi Army Division. "The reason is to show the people that IA and U.S. Army's target is to help people and to provide them whatever they need."

The units prepare for the humanitarian missions working together and gathering information at various markets and shops. The Soldiers research the market value of food products and look for vendors that can provide in bulk for future humanitarian assistance missions.

"We buy it at market prices," said Capt. Matthew Schlosser, commander, Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment. "We are buying it locally so it stimulates the local economy."

There is a lot of difference compared between eight months ago and now, said Muhammed. There was a challenge before, but now things have gotten much better. The people have started working with the IA. They are supporting and helping to get the information needed to catch the bad guys.

"I wish the people to continue with this effort for us so we will do our job better," said Muhammed. "Lastly, I want to say thanks for the coalition forces. They were a big support to us and helpful for us to continue this job.
