The U.S. military community in Singapore recognized Earth Day throughout the month of April with environmental awareness events and cleanup activities to help promote environmental stewardship overseas.

In keeping with the spirit of year’s theme to, End Plastic Pollution, the Singapore Area Coordinator (SAC) and its community members held an Earth Day Open House and an Installation Clean-up, which gathered more than 20 participants in gathering trash and debris throughout the local area. In addition, the SAC Children and Youth Programs department held two events in which youth and teens held a, Party for the Planet and organized an activity where participants made Recycled Robots.

“During our open house, many people stopped by to look at the educational materials posted and to play some environmental games,” said Chantry Davis, the SAC Environmental Director. “I think a lot of people were surprised to see the number of things that SAC does with the community here in Singapore to promote environmental awareness and protection.”

The CYP activities were just as active in terms of raising awareness for environmental stewardship among youth and teens. For Davis, participating in this event was a great opportunity.

“For our part, we prepared a recycling game in an effort to teach the kids about the importance of recycling, how to recycle, and then the process of how those recycled items are broken down and become new items,” Davis said. “I was amazed with how much the kids already know and with how enthusiastic they are about protecting the environment.”

For Davis and the SAC Environmental team, having the community’s participation this year was a step in the right direction and offers a solid outlook in planning events for next year’s Earth Day celebration.

“Hopefully, this inspires more people to get involved when we have events in the future and to help SAC reach our environmental goals,” Davis said.
