EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The legacy of 23 Green Berets were honored by 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) during a memorial ceremony held at the 7th SFG(A) compound, May 24, here.
U.S. Army Chaplain Maj. Ishmael Serrano, 1BN, 7th SFG(A) officiated the ceremony with opening remarks recognizing the sacrifices made by these men.
“We gather today to give recognition for all that [these Soldiers sacrificed] and gave to their country.”
The ceremony took place as a part of an annual memorial tribute celebrating of the lives lived, sacrifices made and the legacies left by the 1BN men and ‘Gold Star’ families represented in the rock garden and 7th SFG(A)-wide.
Following the invocation, 1st Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Aaron P. Bush, reminded everyone in attendance of their purpose for being there on that day.
“We honor our legacy through selfless commitment in everything we do. Those before us set the standard for us to follow through their level of honor, bravery, love of country, love of family and love of God. So today, in the past and forever in the future, we honor that because honoring our legacy is in our DNA.”
The individual memorials, some adorned with flowers and greeting cards, are all marked by an American flag at half-mast and an inscribed stone, each honoring a 1st BN Green Beret who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“The majority of the people [who] are represented by these stones are our friends, they’re our brothers and will always be a part of our family,” said Bush.
At the closing of the ceremony, family members, team members and attendees were able to walk through the garden, take photos and remember their loved ones.
The 1BN within 7th SFG(A) plans, prepares for, and when ordered, executes Special Operations missions in support of directed Theater Security Cooperation Plans and Overseas Contingency Operations.
