MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Sailors from Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) in Millington, TN, attended a Women Helping Women breakfast at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, June 12.

The annual breakfast, hosted by the Salvation Army-Memphis, had women from different organizations in attendance and focused on what women can do to help out local communities.

This year’s theme coincides with MLK50, recognizing the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, focusing particularly on the women’s role in the eradication of poverty.

Mariel Hicks, volunteer coordinator of events with the Salvation Army, helped handpick each woman who was invited from a researched list of influential women in the Mid-South. She expressed that the goal of the breakfast was to get the women involved in the community, in any way possible.

“Our idea is to find the woman’s role in eradication of poverty in our city,” said Hicks. “We have many women of influence in attendance and we’re hoping that the women in our programs can learn from them.”

Influential women from different communities were represented at the breakfast, including judges for Shelby County, and military personnel from NSA Mid-South. Together, the women learned and discussed various ways to serve outside of their day-to-day activities and help out wherever they can.

“Our service should extend into the community which we live,” said Lt. Cmdr. Tiffoney Jackson, director of enlisted programs at NRC. “The Salvation Army Purdue Center of Hope provides outreach opportunities for us to help local women and children beat the odds of brokenness, hopelessness, and poverty. It’s a great opportunity for us to make a difference in our own backyards.”

Capt. Margaret Calloway, director, medical waivers for NRC explains that events like these are important to the community as it preserves their bond with local members of the military.

“I routinely participate in community events. For this particular event, it was really important for the community to see female Navy officers of different ranks and rates in attendance,” said Calloway. “This breakfast provided an avenue for aspiring females interested in military service
to gain knowledge and potential mentors. We are always role models in the communities we serve.”
