    Boots in teal

    WAEGWAN, SOUTH KOREA

    04.19.2018

Story by Cpl. E Chan Yoo

    2nd Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade

The main purpose of this display is to inform Soldiers that sexual assault is possible and can happen at anytime and anyplace. Each pair of these boots represents a Soldier who was a victim of sexual assault in 2ID SBDE in fiscal year 2017. Teal was chosen as it is the official color of the U.S. Army’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program.

“What we’re trying to do is promote that sexual assault is real, and that it occurs within our ranks. A lot of the times, people hear there may be a SHARP case, but to visually see it, people are like‘I didn’t realize we had this many cases,’” Carpenter, a San Antonio, Texas native, said.

The teal boots display, based on the civilian side and modified for military, is the main project of 2ID SBDE for those who think that SHARP has no relevance to them.

“It’s a visualization to get people aware if they do run into a situation that may lead to a sexual assault, to speak up and say something,” Carpenter said.

Soldiers who walked through the building could not help but stop and read the display, taking in its significance.

“I thought it was really nice. The color itself captures your eyes. It invigorates thought, and it’s a testament to why we’re here. Its very appropriate we chose boots in teal, because boots signify so much about where you care, where you came from, where you're going,” said Sgt. 1st Class Stanley Osinski, brigade tasking noncommissioned officer, and Boston, Massachusetts native.

In addition to this display, Carpenter said future SHARP events will include a SHARP walkthrough every Wednesday at the Champion Café in Camp Carroll. There will also be a Denim Day to deliver the message that sexual assault is not caused by how tight one’s jeans are, it’s caused by the one who commits the act itself.

For the Champion Soldiers who always have to maintain their readiness, SHARP is a factor that declines their morale and ‘Fight Tonight’ spirit. On account of this, Champion Soldiers must constantly look after each other, help each other and do their best to prevent SHARP incidents.
